How Can We Help?
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. Prostate cancer usually grows very slowly, and finding and treating it before symptoms occur may not improve men’s health or help them live longer. UpToDate offers two levels of content for patients:
- The Basics are short overviews. They are written in accordance with plain language principles and answer the four or five most important questions a person might have about a medical problem.
- Beyond the Basics are longer, more detailed reviews. They are best for readers who want detailed information and are comfortable with some medical terminology.
- This collection includes patient information handouts that physicians can provide to their patients. Use the filters to sort by discipline or topic. You can also search by keyword for articles that include handouts. The collection includes handouts published in AFP since 1998; clinical judgment should be used when referring to handouts, especially older ones, as the validity of the medical information included cannot be guaranteed. For regularly updated information on a variety of health topics, please visit familydoctor.org, the AAFP patient education website.

Consult a librarian – Investigators doing their own literature search can consult with a librarian to develop relevant search strategies for their specific protocol. Strategies are designed to prevent duplication of research and to address alternatives. There is no fee for this service.
Ask a Librarian to do your search – A librarian can do the literature search for you! The investigator first meets with a librarian to discuss his/her protocol subject. The librarian then designs search strategies to prevent duplication of research and to address alternatives, and performs the search. There is no charge to URMC affiliates for most databases.
Note: It is strongly recommended that investigators keep copies of their search strategies as documentation.
